VFTB 186: The Rise of Machine Intelligence

smarter_than_usWHAT HAPPENS when machines become smarter than us?

Dr. Stuart Armstrong, a Research Fellow at the Future of Humanity Institute (FHI) at Oxford University, discusses his book Smarter Than Us: The Rise of Machine Intelligence.  He talks about the challenges of programming a so-called “friendly AI”, the difficulty in defining a “good” future as a target for said AI, and the reason that the FHI considers an artificial superintelligence a potential threat to the survival of the human race.

Derek and Sharon Gilbert will be at the Prophecy in the News Pikes Peak Prophecy Summit July 25-27, 2014 at the Marriott Hotel in Colorado Springs. Watch for information here.

  1. Listening to the first 15mins of this, I had a light-bulb moment: the problems Dr Armstrong expounds about trying to lock down laws for AI so they don’t ‘kill’ everybody (paraphrasing) made me realise this is why God is love. Laws don’t work…love does (Godly love, not Hollywood love). Cool

  2. What about programming an AI with the “10 commandments” as its moral directive. Or the directive from the new testament – Mark 12:30-31 – the greatest commandment – AND YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH.’ 31″The second is this, ‘YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.’ Wouldn’t “humans” be as the “god” to the programmed AI?
