VFTB 109: Why the Nephilim?

THIS IS a topic that seems to be growing increasingly contentious of late. Are the Nephilim coming back? What is the evidence?

Filmmaker and author Rob Skiba believes the answer is “yes”, and he presents his case for the return of the giants.  Check out Rob’s blog here.

For a dissenting view, see Guy Malone’s post at AlienResistance.org, What We Don’t Believe, and Dr. Mike Heiser’s caveat at his UFO Religions Blog.

  1. I appreciate the always well done and interesting interviews. I hear quite a bit about the Nephilim and it always seems to pivot on the one verse in Matthew 24, when referring to their possible return.
Of course its always a good thing to look at the verses in context and in this case simply the verse after…which seems to try to explain that verse in particular.

37 But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,

39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

In verse 39 it even echos the same phrasing as the infamous “Nephilim-Return” verse 37. Verse 39 is even divided by semi colon both parts of that verse are explaining each other, that “so shall the Coming of the Son of Man” be be like the days of Noah, that they didnt know the day that judgment would come”, which fits perfectly with the passages before 37 and continued after 39.
It seems plain to me that it is saying people will be carrying on “business as usual” as Christ comes in a thief in a night to them as was the case in the Days of Noah.
Obviously this is a far less interesting or fascinating perspective, but far less extrapolating. I love listening and reading many of the speakers/authors about this subject, but they almost always mention Matt 24:37 alone with out the next verse and the complimenting verse after that…all within context of the “thief in the night”.
Could Nephilim come back in the end? I dont see why not. Are there “sexual or reproductive” themes to spiritual possessions and abduction phenomena? absolutely.
As Brother Derek put very well, its not a matter to divide over…as we are united in Christ. Its good for all of us to study, and especially in context and with the corresponding or complimenting verses.
No matter what happens, all Glory will go to God in the end. Praise the Lord! Thanks very much for doing and offering these interviews.

  2. Great answer Donnie! I haven’t listened to the podcast yet (but will D&S, and will come on if you’d like me to talk about this sometime) but I thank you for your telling analysis here of how many seem to want to treat Matt 24:37 so very out of context – esp when the corresponding verse in Luke makes your point even more clearly.

The main thing that sticks out to me in your note – from what Derek said it seems – is that this is NOT an issue the Body of Christ of today should be dividing over. I’m sorry to report to you, but the view from my particular corner of “the bunker” is that it has become just that. There are people (Christians) today that for whom this issue seems to an essential and yes dividing point of fellowship over. We’ve experienced no small amount of “hate mail” and witnessed that many who promote a modern “Return of the Nephilim” who dis-fellowship and then turn on and attack those with a different view. It’s sad.. but “props” to Derek/Sharon and VFTB for touching on this, and thanks again Donnie for your sensible insight and comment.

    1. Author

Thanks for your comments! I’m not ruling out the possibility that Matthew 24:37 means that the Nephilim are returning. We just shouldn’t make that particular interpretation of the verse a test of orthodoxy, because that isn’t necessarily what Jesus meant.

  3. In hearing many many hours of discussion on this topic, the context of WHO is getting married in Genesis 6, doesn’t get mentioned. The only ones directly stated as being involved in marriage are: Genesis 6:2 “That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.” In context, it is not human to human marriage that is being described in Genesis 6 and directly referred to by Christ in Matt 24:38. Who the “they” are in Matt is the “they” in Genesis 6:2, if the context is to be maintained.
To assume that the marriage being described is human with human,a “business as usual” type of thing in Matt 24,requires some discounting of who is being directly referred to in Gen 6, which is Sons of God and daughters of men.
It is curious how often the context of both passages TOGETHER is overlooked in these discussions. If Christ was only referring to a “business as usual” situation before His return , it is odd that He would direct attention to the passage that clearly states that the marriage participants were Sons of God and daughters of men, not the intermarriage of humans only.
We are not certain about how to put that in the future setting. However, the Lord was directly referencing that those activities in Genesis 6 will happen again, especially if one uses a literal interpretation of Scripture as we like to stick to.
We always enjoy your interviews Derek!! We have learned allot from them!!
